The Square Front Anamorphics from Lomo are very characterful vintage anamorphics. The peculiarity of their design with the rectangular glass at the front is also responsible for the characteristic horizontal flares, among other things.

The set consists of: 35mm 2.5 / 50mm 2.0 / 80mm 2.0

The squeeze factor is 1:2, that means the image is squeezed in half along the horizontal axis. If you now expose a sensor in 4:3 aspect ratio and then squeeze the image again with the factor 2, you get the legendary, classic 2.35:1 „Cinemascope“ aspect ratio.

In addition to the various typical artifacts such as flares and oval bokhé, an unusually wide field of view is achieved at relatively long focal lengths. And thus a shallower depth of field than with comparable spherical wide-angle optics.

Depending on the camera, the image can already be viewed rectified during shooting, or a de-squeeze must be achieved using appropriate monitoring solutions. Alexa Mini, Ursa Mini Pro and all Reds, for example, support anamorphic rotation and offer a de-squeeze function in camera.
